Where is everybody!

The humm of my computer and the occasional ambulance outside are all I hear as our office is quite empty today (and next to a hospital). That's one of the anomalies of working in a missions organization: people often disappear for a little while. Frequent flyer miles seem to be a missionary's friend. Even my office-mate has taken the day off to spend with her parents who are in town visiting.

Some people would think of this as a relief with the distraction of talking with co-workers minimized but I actually find it very distracting! I don't have my nieghbors surrounding me with all their hard work. Slacking off is not a term used around here as it doesn't exist. Almost everytime I look up people are laboring away trying to get things done. Yet at the same time, laughter is heard up and down the hall. I love this work environment. Everyone is hard at work and dedicated to their jobs but we are also relaxed and enjoy each other's company.

This week I had a little spare time and was able to help the Mobilization Department in making follow up phone calls from contacts made at the Urbana Conference. Then for POD I have started researching companies to use for background and credit checks of our future affiliates. A lot of people would think this would be boring but I have actually found it quite fun. Using the internet and making phone calls to find out more about these companies has been entertaining. Then of course I'm keeping up with my roles in the affiliation process as new missionaries are joining up with NMSI. In Children and Family development I have been hacking away at trying to decide what parts of curriculum to use for our up coming COAT. That is all I will be doing in Children and Family for the next couple of weeks as we only have 17 days until the next COAT starts! Wow, how time flies!

This week Joe has been learning how to do reimbursements for our missionaries and imputing data on our mission database. He is going through a majority of the database and checking to be sure that all information we have on that person or church is filled out. That is over 25,000 names! He really enjoys when he is working on opening the mailed in checks and comes across the checks that our supporters send to us. I think it's a good reminder of how God has provided for us through our friends and family. We couldn't be here doing what we do without you behind us!

If you were wanting an update about our crazy full weekend last weekend here it is. Joe and the bicycling crew left around 10am on Saturday morning. They biked the 14 miles to the Sannibel Island bridge. I caught a ride with a couple of friends and we drove down bringing a picnic lunch. The wind was crazy down by the water and we had to pin our blankets down with purses and anything else heavy enough. We also had to be sure our food didn't blow away! The sea birds had no fear of us. In fact the sea gulls were quite anxious to see if we would drop anything. I did throw some left over sandwich in the water and within seconds the birds were flocking and trying to get at it. Giant cranes would come within yards of us and Pelicans floated out on the water. This didn't stop Joe ofcourse from running around and chasing them off. But they would just wait a minute or two and come right back. After lunch I rode home again while the bikers started their 14 mile treck back. Joe got home and got a glass of water then turned around and drove a friend home. When he got back he had just enough time to shower, change and jump in a car to head to the movie. Though we had seen Avatar once before, it was still very good the second time!

Sunday we went to church and came right home so we could rest up from our active Saturday before we went to the guys' house for the Super Bowl party. The guys' supplied the meat (on the grill) and everyone else brought sides, chips, dips, and drinks. We were pretty evenly split when it came to New Orleans vs. Indy fans. But in the end, us NOLA fans triumphed! It was a great game to watch and a full house of great friends to watch it with!

We actually have very few plans for this weekend, which a lot of people might like for following a weekend like last week's, but President's day has our office closed on Monday. A three day weekend with little to do could get rather boring. But that's the beauty of living on campus. Having all these people around allows for a lot of spontaneity.
